STRAWBERRIES AND OTHER BERRIES
The strawberry is known as the ‘queen of berries’. Almost everybody likes strawberries. Its botanical name, fragaria, means ‘aroma’. The strawberry was enjoyed as far back as the stone age, and was extensively cultivated in medieval times.
With its high amounts of vitamin C as well as minerals such as calcium, potassium, phosphorus and especially iron, the strawberry is very nutritious.
Strawberries are very sensitive to pressure and spoil quickly if not handled with utmost care during transport.
Tunnel-grown produce from Spain come onto the market as early as late February, and by the end of April – depending on weather conditions – are slowly replaced by German produce. The first German produce comes from Baden, south Germany, and is also tunnel-grown, with open-air produce entering the market in mid-May. From mid-June, raspberries and later blueberries add their colours and flavours to our berry selection. |
